Blue Zones: Preserving, Protecting and Bringing Their Teachings to Life

On September 8, 2025, Professor Michel Poulain, internationally renowned demographer and co-discoverer of the Blue Zones, took part in the Travelers’ Table organized at The Merode in Brussels. He was accompanied by Dominique Honhon, co-founder of the non-profit organization Living Blue Zone.

Throughout the discussion, Professor Poulain explained how he identified and scientifically validated the first Blue Zones — rare and precious regions where people live longer and in better health. He also highlighted the threats that now weigh on their balance: the transformation of traditional diets, the weakening of community ties, and the commercial misuse of the concept.

Some regions, such as Loma Linda in the United States, have never been officially recognized by demographers. Protecting the term “Blue Zone” means preserving the scientific credibility and universal value of a concept based on rigorous demographic criteria.

The message is clear: it is no longer about discovering new zones, but about bringing their lessons to life each day:
– rebuilding social connections,
– returning to simple, local, planet-friendly food,
– moving naturally,
– and living with genuine purpose.

These principles are at the heart of the mission of Living Blue Zone International ASBL, founded by Michel Poulain, Myriam Demulder, Émilie Goffin and Dominique Honhon. The association works to put them into practice through concrete projects in schools, businesses and communities, contributing to lasting social transformation.

This event, held as part of the Travelers’ Table at The Merode, offered a rich and inspiring exchange — a reflection of the venue’s spirit of openness and dialogue.
